dan

Mr Dan Parkes, Principal

What do you enjoy teaching / what do you enjoy about your job?
I really enjoy my job, the opportunity to pioneer such a innovative new school is something I count a real privilege.  In terms of teaching I have experience in many aspects of Music, Music Technology and Media.  I really enjoy teaching Music Theory and I think it is really important that all musicians develop their skills in reading and writing music.  I lead the staff-student band and love music ensemble performance. I perform many different styles of music, but I’m probably happiest playing music of a jazz and gospel style.

Darren

Mr Darren Perry, Assistant Principal & Director of Key Stage 4

What do you enjoy teaching / what do you enjoy about your job?
I am passionate about the teaching of business and enterprise and I enjoy teaching all aspects of the course, however I get the most satisfaction from teaching International Business and Marketing. International Business is always a real eye opener for students as it challenges them to question the world around them and consider different cultures and global points of view. Marketing is rooted in psychology and a very popular subject with students as they question the power and influence of media on their expectations, buying habits and mindsets. I see ‘real-world’ learning experiences as being critical to student engagement, enjoyment and attainment and I am lucky to work with a very dynamic and creative team of professionals that challenge and engage students through ‘live’ projects and innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

What do you enjoy teaching / what do you enjoy about your job?
I really enjoy seeing students develop and learning new skills and crafts. Particularly the thrill when students learn how to edit properly and they look with pride and say ‘I did that!’ The facilities we have are great and allow both students and staff to use industry standard kit that is second to none anywhere in the Midlands. I enjoy live events and getting the students involved with live briefs and transmitting their radio and TV shows on the Internet. I really enjoy being involved with music and playing the piano and saxophone, lets me indulge in this my second passion.

What do you enjoy teaching / what do you enjoy about your job?

Performing Arts is my passion, I love the creativity, imagination and teamwork involved. It is an open window for anybody to dive into the world of performance and use drama as a unique tool to explore their emotions. I believe it to be a fantastic method for building confidence and self esteem, as well as allowing hidden feelings to run free. My passion for this subject area is what drives me to want to teach it to others and watch as they create and explore their imagination knowing I have been a part of that journey.

Joe

Mr Joe Karchud, Learning Coach (Teacher)

What do you enjoy teaching / what do you enjoy about your job?
I love that I get to incorporate my experiences and knowledge in a “hands on” environment. One day, I could be teaching stage setup, sound and performance technique- (in preparation for one of our many term-time showcases) then the next, I could be breaking down song form and teaching elements of composition using one of our fully equipped classrooms. I have worked in many different environments, supporting young adults to improve their chances of incorporating the creative industries into their lifestyles and developing their opportunities for employment or further education. My passion for music ranges from Delta Blues, through to modern day compositions. I’m heavily influenced by community, equality and diversity and these are the underlying values that I use to deliver music in a fun way.
