Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE)

New and updated courses are currently being developed in the following subjects:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Computing
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Geography
  • Design and Technology
  • MFL (French / German)

Who are these courses aimed at?

These courses are designed for applicants who have been offered, or are hoping to gain, a place on a postgraduate Initial Teacher Training (ITT) course in England. SKE programmes are designed for ITT candidates to gain the depth of knowledge needed to train to teach their chosen subject.

The courses will help identify your individual training needs and top up your subject knowledge in areas that would be difficult to address on your own, such as certain practical elements of chemistry or physics.

We will assess and discuss subject knowledge with all candidates at interview and advise them on the most appropriate course.

The National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) offers full funding for successful applicants and therefore courses can be free to participants.

The NCTL currently offers a fully funder bursary to eligible applicants.

Eligibility

To be eligible trainees must:

  1. Have an offer from an ITT provider for a post-graduate course
  2. Have agreement from their ITT provider that they should attend
  3. Not already hold qualified teacher status.

Walsall Studio School and the Mercian Trust

Walsall Studio School is a founding member of  The Mercian Trust – an exciting new Multi Academy Trust of schools including selective grammar schools (Queen Mary’s Grammar School and Queen Mary’s High School), secondary comprehensive schools (Aldridge School and Shire Oak Academy) and the specialist 14-19 academy (Walsall Studio School). We also have an Alternative Provision Free School in pre-opening scheduled to open next academic year (The Ladder School).

Our SKE courses are designed to be an introduction to Initial Teacher Training (ITT) courses with a focus on the subject knowledge trainees will require to become successful teachers within their subject.  All courses are taught by experienced teachers who have expertise both in their subject area and working with trainee teachers. Courses will take place prior to the start of ITT or with some elements being taught alongside the training programme.

Course dates

Start dates will be course specific either in the Autumn 2017 or Spring 2018.
